Working with your lawyer should be a source of clarity and support, not additional stress. Our goal is to make the legal process as smooth and straightforward as possible, ensuring you feel confident and informed every step of the way. The process for most business law matters—whether they are advisory, negotiation, or resolving a dispute without litigation—breaks down into four steps: 1. initial consultation, 2. gathering information to develop a strategy, 3. implementing the strategy, and 4. achieving resolution.
What happens during the initial consultation with a lawyer?
During the initial consultation, we will discuss your needs, goals, and any concerns. We will explain how we can help you and share our experience. If we both feel it’s a good fit, we will also go over the details on how we can work together. To get started, we will email you an engagement agreement. If we have agreed to a flat-fee service, we will also email you an invoice. If we have agreed to an hourly service, we also send you an initial trust request to pay an evergreen retainer. You can sign and pay on your phone or computer. We are not able to start working until you sign and pay.
What information should I provide to my lawyer to develop a strategy?
As our client, you will need to share as much relevant information as possible with us as your lawyer and provide relevant documents, contracts, agreements, correspondence, and any other materials related to your issue. The lawyer will use this information to conduct a legal analysis and develop a strategy tailored to your goals.
Sometimes clients think they will save money by not giving their lawyer “too much” information, especially information which they are worried might be damaging to their case. This often turns out to be short-sighted and more costly because we have to fully understand what’s happening in order to develop a strategy that has the best chance of success. The more we know, the better we can help you.
How does the lawyer develop a strategy for my case?
Based on the information you provide as the client, we conduct a thorough legal analysis to identify issues, risks, and opportunities. This may include legal research to determine which laws may apply and how similar cases have been decided by courts or administrative agencies. It’s our job to tailor the legal strategy to your case and to communicate the strategy and plan to you in clear, understandable terms. It’s important at this point that you provide honest feedback so that we can be on the same page and make adjustments as needed.
What actions will the lawyer take to implement the plan?
Implementation may include drafting contracts or other documents, negotiating agreements, or filing legal documents. Along the way, we will keep you informed of progress and any significant developments. You can always reach out with additional information, updates, or questions. Sometimes, the lawyer will suggest tweaking the plan as the work unfolds.
Every resolution is tailored to you.
As we go through the legal process together, our law firm works toward the best possible outcome in your matter and makes sure you understand what is happening. As your lawyer, we will finalize all necessary documents and tasks. We will also discuss any ongoing legal support you might need and how to maintain a relationship for future legal needs.
